Biography

Kendra & Kat, also known by their online handles Wensleydale & Ocicatsy, have been collectively creating comics for over 13 years, and plotting together at local cafés far longer. With comics and zines that run the gamut from queer space pirate shenanigans to illustrated cookbooks inspired by wrestling, they are driven by sparkles and fun. Their work has been printed in anthologies such as Coven and Purity, and they’ve been a staple in the Washington, DC-area comic scene since tabling at DC Zinefest back in 2012. Since then, they’ve tabled and spoken at numerous conventions including Small Press Expo (SPX) and the Toronto Comics Art Festival (TCAF). Kendra & Kat have also exhibited and spoken at galleries like Washington Project for the Arts and the Fenwick Gallery at George Mason University. When they aren’t thinking about comics, making comics, or reading comics, they’re involved in numerous TTRPG campaigns or traveling.

Artist Statement

We make the comics we want to read.

Both of us identify as queer women. Growing up, it was a struggle to find comics that we connected with in the U.S. comic market–the representation of positive female characters was few and far between, and queer characters even more. Media in general had a lack of female-focused or female-created content. It wasn’t until we discovered manga and independent webcomics in middle- and high school that we realized that comics could be aimed at an audience that wasn’t just the cisgender straight white male demographic. Independently, we began creating our own comics–once we met in college and realized we had similar interests, we decided to take our collaborative ideas and dedicate them to paper (and website). We wanted to be able to have our characters live in worlds where gender and sexuality were no longer sources of conflict; we wanted our characters to have happy endings after seeing too much media where the plot was dramatic and serious.

We want our comics to be true to ourselves and our interests. We love reading and making comics; we want our work to share that enthusiasm and to inspire others to create content themselves.
